On 26 October 2026 the European Payments Initiative (EPI) started rolling out Wero for online payments in the Netherlands. It is the first step in replacing iDEAL, the checkout method Dutch shoppers have used for about two decades.
Eleven banks are live at launch: ABN AMRO, ASN Bank, bunq, BUUT, Finom, ING, Knab, Nationale-Nederlanden, Rabobank, Triodos Bank and Van Lanschot Kempen. Two of them, bunq and Finom, are digital banks covered on this site.
Merchants move from iDEAL to Wero through their payment service providers, each on its own timetable. The parties aim to complete the migration by 31 December 2027. Subscriptions and pay-on-delivery are planned for Q2 2027, and purchase protection for Dutch consumers is due in January 2028.
For consumers, little changes on paper: you keep confirming payments in your own banking app. The main risk at this stage is fraud. When the switch was announced, warnings were issued that fraudsters may use it to send fake “update your details” messages, and EPI stresses that neither Wero nor the banks will ask for personal or banking information outside the secure banking environment.
Wero peer-to-peer payments are already live in Belgium, France, Germany and Luxembourg, where EPI reports 60 million users. Online payments are live in Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg.
What it means for users: if you bank with bunq or Finom in the Netherlands, your bank is among the eleven whose customers EPI named for the Wero online-payments launch on 26 October. EPI says consumers don’t need to take any action or subscribe to a new service, and that banks will keep customers informed through their official channels. Treat any message asking you to “re-register” or “update details” for Wero as a likely scam and only act inside your banking app.
