Neobanks by country: common questions
- Which neobanks operate across the whole EU?
- Several neobanks passport a single licence across the European Economic Area, so they are available in most EU countries — Revolut (via its Lithuanian banking licence), N26 (German licence), bunq (Dutch licence) and Wise (EMI passport) reach the widest. Specific features and the availability of a local IBAN still vary by country.
- Can I open a neobank account as a non-resident or expat?
- Often, yes — if you are resident in a country the neobank serves and can pass its identity and address checks. Some providers issue a local IBAN; others give a foreign-country IBAN that works for SEPA payments but is occasionally rejected by local employers or billers, which we flag per country.
- Does deposit protection change depending on my country?
- The €100,000 ceiling is harmonised across the EU, but the scheme that pays out is the one in the bank’s home country — for example the German EdB for a German-licensed bank, regardless of where you live. An e-money provider has no Deposit Guarantee Scheme in any country; funds are safeguarded instead.
- Why isn't a local IBAN from my country offered?
- Many neobanks operate cross-border on one home-country IBAN rather than issuing a domestic one in every market. SEPA rules require euro payments to be accepted regardless of the IBAN’s country, but in practice some local billers and employers still ask for a domestic IBAN — check the country page before relying on it for salary or direct debits.
