What bunq is, in 2026

bunq is a full Dutch credit institution (DNB-regulated, ECB-supervised since 2023). Unlike most competitors, it offers local IBANs in multiple EU countries — a DE-IBAN for a German customer, a FR-IBAN for a French customer, without opening a new account.

Feature-wise: up to 25 sub-accounts ("Spaces"), joint accounts, shared groups, a savings product with competitive rates, and bunq Tree for reforestation contributions. The app is expressive; some love it, some find it overly gamified.

Safety and regulation

Deposits up to €100,000 are covered by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee Scheme run by De Nederlandsche Bank. Same legal protection as a Dutch incumbent bank.

The voluntary top-up insurance above €100,000 (arranged with Swiss Re) was discontinued in Q1 2026; the statutory cover remains unchanged. For deposits under €100k this is a non-event.

Hands-on UX

The app is dense — more so than N26, less than Revolut. Spaces are excellent for budgeting once you've configured them. The onboarding is slightly longer than Revolut's (15–20 minutes for full KYC).

Support is in-app chat only, typically responsive in minutes on paid tiers. The in-app feedback loop ("let us know what's missing") is more responsive than most banks; some features (like round-up savings) shipped as direct responses to user requests.

Who bunq is for

Choose bunq if: you need a local IBAN in an EU country where most neobanks only offer the Lithuanian option, you want 20+ sub-accounts for a complex budget, or you're willing to pay €3.99–€17.99/mo for feature depth.

Look elsewhere if: you want a free tier (bunq doesn't have one), you prize minimalism (N26 is calmer), or you want crypto/stocks inside the app (Revolut).
